Shizuka Hariu and the SHSH team proudly collaborated on the monumental production Bells for Peace, a participatory public event marking the opening of the Manchester International Festival (MIF) 2019. Working closely with renowned artist Yoko Ono and the MIF team, SHSH contributed a thoughtful and meticulous approach to the stage design, incorporating elements such as bell towers, screens, and wish trees throughout the site.
Yoko Ono's vision invites the people of Manchester to gather in Cathedral Gardens, uniting diverse voices in a powerful message of peace. Participants are encouraged to bring their own bells, joining thousands in ringing and singing for peace while welcoming the world to Manchester.
This groundbreaking commission marks Ono's first major work for the city, underscoring her enduring legacy as one of the world's foremost artists. In preparation for the event, communities across Greater Manchester crafted unique ceramic bells in special workshops, adding their voices to the collective call for peace.
As Yoko Ono eloquently puts it, "Come and join together to send a message of peace to the world. The beauty of this piece will break the sky and more. Ring for peace! PEACE is POWER! I love you all." This stirring event embodies the spirit of unity and harmony, echoing across the city and beyond.
