Closer

Scenography

Closer is an experimental dance performance in which audience is invited in the performing space with wireless headphones, in order to feel the genetic level of the dance movement.

Shizuka's challenge was to make an extremely artificial surrounding and a very natural organic space for both performers and audience. It meant also to create maximum freedom for the audience in a limited theatre space.
She designed a huge artificial forest using 2500 bamboo sticks. The up side down landscape was hanged and painted in a light grayish colour, in order to reduce its natural aspect and to create a more abstract contemporary expression to audience who could touch the scenography. The Bamboo forest was softly waving when dancers and audience were touching it during the performance. It created also the ambiguous distance between performers and spectators, and gave the freedom to see the dance 360 degrees.
