Dr. Shizuka Hariu
is a interdisciplinary designer and scenographer. Since 2009, she is co-director of the office SHSH ARCHITECTURE + SCENOGRAPHY
. She is also a member of the Society of British Theatre Designers and the Japan Association of Theatre Designers and Technicians.
Recently, she designed the exhibition and lighting design for the epic architectural exhibition Sensing Spaces, which was commissioned by the Royal Academy of Arts in London. She has also debuted her scenography design for Move/Still at the New National Theatre in Tokyo. Shizuka presented her work at PQ 2015 and Make/Believe UK design for Performance at V&A as part of the UK representation team of New National Exhibition in 2015.
She has designed for a wide variety of stage productions throughout Europe, primarily in Belgium, UK and in Japan. She specialises in design for contemporary dance, her designs were seen in Cloud/Crowd (New National Theatre Tokyo), No Body (Sadler's Wells), Solid Traces (Charleroi Danses), Réflexions sur la Table Verte (Olga de Soto), Kunsten Festival Centre 2012 (Kunstenfestivaldesarts), Pénombre (Rosalba Torres, Les ballets C de la B), Compil d’Avril (Charleroi Danses), LoveLoveRobot (Yasuyuki Endo, Star Dancers Ballet), Closer (Deep Blue), Kaku (Maha Works), Hopscotch (Rabbit Hole Collective), City:Zen (Shobana Jeyasingh), View Masters (Rebecca September) and Sacred Monsters (Akram Khan Company and Sylvie Guillem) which performed with glowing reviews internationally.
These productions have premiered and toured in venues such as Sadler’s Wells and The Place theatre in London, La Monnaie Opera House and Beursschouwburg in Brussels, Théâtre des Champs-Élysées and Centre Pompidou in Paris, Sydney Opera House, Tokyo Bunka Kaikan, HAU2 in Berlin and many others. Her works have since extended to Benjamin Britten’s opera production, A Time There Was (Frederic Wake- Walker), and the theatre production Trout Stanley (Matt Steinberg). Earlier in her career she assisted the Belgian scenographer Jan Versweyveld for the opera I Due Foscari and for Bitches Brew (Anne Teresa de Keersmaeker/Rosas).
She obtained a Master degree of Engineering in Architecture at Tokyo University of Science in 2000. She started a doctoral research at Central Saint Martins College of Art and Design and she obtained her PhD by Published works ‘Between the Imaginary and the Concrete - Scenography for Contemporary Dance’ at Leeds Beckett University in 2014.
